Structural Map Sidebar — Unit 0.1.11

At the end of Arc 1, the structural challenge becomes clear: how does a tightly integrated system evolve without collapsing its architecture?

Many fear that reopening a system invites relativism. That is what Peikoff's Doctrine of Closure sought to prevent. But reopening inquiry does not mean erasing boundaries — it means returning to the method that built the system in the first place. It means honoring structure without fossilizing it.

This sidebar draws a sharp distinction between two postures: canon-centered preservation and method-centered evolution.

Table 0.1.11-2: Canon-Centered Preservation Peikoff's posture, post-1989

Feature Canon-Centered Posture
System status Closed and complete
Interpretation Fixed to original intent
Evolution Not permitted within the label
Risk avoided Corruption, dilution, relativism
Failure mode Fossilization — truth becomes unreachable
Role of new fields Peripheral or non-philosophical
Integration strategy Protect core, exclude ambiguity
Virtue required Loyalty to doctrine

Table 0.1.11-3: Method-Centered Evolution The posture of rational method

Feature Method-Centered Posture
System status Open to refinement
Interpretation Rooted in method, not intent
Evolution Permitted under rational scrutiny
Risk avoided Dogmatism, obsolescence
Failure mode Drift — truth becomes unmoored
Role of new fields Integral to philosophical structure
Integration strategy Test coherence, preserve structural joints
Virtue required Rational independence

The distinction matters because the system is not being loosened. Its integrity is being reasserted through method. The structure must hold — but its contact with reality must remain live. This is not relativism. It is methodological fidelity.

Canon protects conclusions. Method protects process. Arc 2 hinges the system open — not to weaken it, but to let it breathe.

Change Log
  • 9 Mar 26 — Restructured the heading and added a subtitle and date line; labeled and captioned the two tables; replaced "load path" with "structural joints" in the method-centered table; removed embedded chart links; bolded key terms on first use; removed consecutive one-sentence closing paragraphs; and tightened the prose throughout.
  • 26 Sep 25 — Initial publication.
