Running the Diagnostic
The individual aesthetic diagnostic is a structured self-assessment designed to make your aesthetic defaults visible as structural information. It is not a taste quiz. It is a value-alignment tool.
The diagnostic is run quarterly — aligned with the extended review cycle that also maintains the individual evidence pack (2.3A.3-3). It produces a brief written record that enters the private artifacts layer of the evidence pack.
Step 1 — Map Your Responses
Over the past quarter, identify three aesthetic experiences that produced resonance (you were moved, engaged, elevated), three that produced discomfort (you felt resistance, unease, or rejection), and — most difficult — three that you encountered with indifference (no meaningful response, processed and forgotten).
For each, note: what was the experience? What specifically produced the response? Can you trace the response to a value, a premise, or a condition in your life?
Step 2 — Identify Your Defaults
Review the responses from Step 1 alongside previous diagnostic records (if any). What patterns emerge? Which of the four collapse patterns (irony as shield, trauma as truth, aesthetic maximalism, identity as performance) describes your default posture most closely? Most people carry elements of more than one — the diagnostic asks which is dominant, not which is exclusive.
The structural question: has the default shifted since the last diagnostic? A shift toward greater ironic detachment, or expanding indifference, or increasing reliance on performative aesthetic identity, is a drift signal — the individual-level expression of the aesthetic degradation Phase I's stress test (1.3.9) identified as a civilizational concern.
Step 3 — Assess Alignment
Compare your aesthetic responses to the value architecture you have been building across all three arcs. Does your aesthetic engagement reflect the values you claim to hold? Where there is alignment, the feedback channel is functioning: your aesthetic life reinforces your philosophical practice. Where there is misalignment — where the art you seek contradicts the values you profess, or where indifference has expanded into domains you claim to care about — the diagnostic has identified a value-integration gap that the other structural disciplines cannot detect.
The output is not a corrective prescription. It is awareness — the aesthetic equivalent of the assumptions register (2.3A.1). What you do with the awareness belongs to your own judgment. The diagnostic's function is to ensure the awareness exists.
