Dependency Dictates Sequence
The load path maps how truth travels through the system. But a map is static. The path itself is not — and neither is the argument that traces it.
A recurring question from readers is: Why this order? Why begin with metaphysics rather than politics? Why map the inheritance before diagnosing the gap? Why not start with the applications that feel immediately useful?
The answer is structural, and the load path makes it visible. The order is not a rhetorical choice. It is a consequence of the dependency relationships the path encodes. Metaphysics comes first not because it is the most interesting domain but because everything downstream borrows its authority from the premises established there. You cannot argue for reason as the means of knowledge unless reality exists independently of the knower. You cannot ground ethics in rational egoism unless reason can reach truth. You cannot derive rights from the requirements of rational life unless life is an objective value. You cannot defend voluntary exchange unless rights are real constraints. Strip the sequence, and you strip the justification.
This is not unique to Objectivism. Any philosophical system that claims its conclusions follow from its premises is making a dependency claim — and dependency claims carry sequence obligations. Present the conclusions before the premises and the reader receives assertions, not arguments.
What Happens When Sequence Is Violated
The most common failure in philosophical exposition — and the failure this project has been designed to prevent — is the presentation of conclusions without structural support. Three violations are worth naming because they recur whenever a philosophical system is communicated at scale.
Starting with applications. Political positions, economic principles, or lifestyle guidance delivered without the ethical and epistemic grounding that justifies them. The positions look robust until they are questioned, at which point the questioner finds nothing beneath the surface. This is the failure mode of most public advocacy of Objectivism: conclusions delivered as slogans, stripped of the load path that makes them more than assertions with assertive packaging.
Starting with critique. Evaluating a system before mapping it produces distortion — the critic attacks a caricature because she has not done the work of understanding the architecture. This is why Phase 0 mapped TO and OO before Phase I diagnosed the gap: the diagnosis is credible only because the mapping was complete.
Starting with innovations. Proposing structural additions before demonstrating the need produces novelty without justification. The reader cannot evaluate whether an innovation solves a real problem because the problem has not been shown. This is why Arc 1 exists at all: the construction in Arc 2 is earned by the diagnosis, not assumed by enthusiasm.
Each of these is a sequence violation — a failure to respect the dependency edges. Each produces the same structural consequence: the argument cannot bear the weight of its own claims because the claims rest on supports that have not been shown to hold. Sequence is not a narrative convenience. It is the load path expressed as an argument.
Change Log
- 14 Mar 26 — Revised under review-revise protocol. Removed unit-by-unit arc walkthrough (redundant for sequential readers; arc introduction 1.1.0 serves this function). Refocused on the structural principle that dependency dictates sequence and the three most common sequence violations. Tightened throughout.
- 11 Mar 26 — Initial publication.
