The Propagation Principle

When a structural element in the load path weakens, the damage does not stay local. It travels along the dependency edges — forward from foundations toward application, backward from application toward foundations, or laterally between domains that share structural assumptions. Understanding where breaks travel is the precondition for designing a system that can absorb failure without collapse.

Table 1.1.5-2 — Three Propagation Patterns

How failure travels through the philosophical load path, with structural characteristics and design implications.

Pattern Origin Direction Key Mechanism Why It Is Dangerous
Forward Upstream (epistemology) Foundation → Application Degraded information environment transmits distortion into every domain that depends on accurate reasoning Each downstream domain inherits the damage and adds its own
Backward Downstream (institutions) Application → Foundation Captured institutions corrupt the epistemic infrastructure that would detect the capture Disables its own detection apparatus on the way through
Lateral Mid-path (economics) Across domains sharing structural assumptions Engineered dependency in one domain undermines the agency assumptions of adjacent domains Crosses domain boundaries; looks like separate problems until viewed from the full load path

Forward: One Origin, Two Legs

When epistemic noise at scale floods the information environment, the break starts in epistemology and travels along more than one dependency edge from that single origin — not down one chain to a final destination. Ethics loses reliable input for moral judgment — not because individuals become irrational but because the systems that carry moral reasoning into public discourse no longer preserve signal.

From ethics, the political leg continues: rights lose the shared epistemic ground on which public justification is possible; when every moral claim can be met with synthetic counter-claims of equal apparent weight, the political defense of rights reduces to power rather than persuasion. Economics, as the testing relation on that political claim, registers the damage: it loses the informed consent that gives exchange its moral authority under the Trader Principle, and that failed test erodes confidence in the rights claim it was evaluating.

Aesthetics does not wait for the political leg to finish. It loses the evaluative context in which art can function as psycho-epistemology by a more direct route — noise degrades the same conceptual-to-perceptual bridge that art depends on to do its work, an epistemological structure aesthetics roots in on its own account, not one it inherits secondhand from economics. Aesthetics is degraded not by bad art but by the destruction of the context in which art can do its work — and it is degraded at roughly the same remove from the origin as ethics, not at the end of a longer chain.

The entire cascade operates without any individual needing to act irrationally. The systems do the degradation on their own.

Backward: Institutions to Foundations

When institutional capture redirects a regulatory body's outputs, the break starts downstream but corrodes upward. Captured regulators restructure markets against the Trader Principle; competition is penalized, incumbency is protected. Rights become decorative — maintained in law, eroded in practice. The virtues do not become inoperable — no structure can revoke what belongs to a choosing consciousness — but their price rises: honesty is punished by captured systems, independence is penalized by structures that reward compliance. The moral quality of an action and its institutional consequences are systematically decoupled.

Eventually the capture reaches the epistemic layer itself — universities, professional bodies, media organizations are subject to the same capture dynamics as any other institution. By the time the break reaches the foundations, the systems that would have detected the corruption have themselves been compromised. Backward propagation is the most dangerous pattern because it disarms the alarm on its way to the source.

Lateral: A Testing Relation Running in the Corrosive Direction

When quiet enclosure converts voluntary participation into structural dependency, the failure shows up first where economics tests political and social claims, and corrodes backward into the rights and political claims being tested. Exit costs are engineered to be prohibitive through data lock-in, network effects, switching costs, and credentialing dependencies. The Trader Principle's assumption of voluntary exchange is removed without announcement — economics is no longer confirming that claim, it is falsifying it. Rights that presuppose free agency are operating where agency is architecturally constrained. The economic problem and the political problem look like separate failures — until the load path, read as a testing relation rather than a one-way chain, reveals them as expressions of the same architectural weakness.

The Structural Lesson

The three patterns share one conclusion: a philosophy that protects only the principles and neglects the systems through which those principles operate will find its principles eroded by the very systems they were meant to govern. The load path does not care which direction the damage travels. It requires only a connected edge and an unattended node.

The operational layer RO must build cannot be a downstream add-on appended after the philosophy is complete. It must be embedded throughout the path: at the epistemic layer (truth infrastructure), at the institutional layer (capture resistance), at the economic layer (exit preservation), and at the cultural layer (aesthetic integrity). A philosophy that attends to some and ignores others will discover that the unattended failures reach the attended domains through dependency edges it did not design for.

Change Log
  • 21 Aug 26 — Rewrote the description of how a failure starting in epistemology spreads: it previously routed through ethics, then rights/politics, then economics, and finally aesthetics as a last stop; it now shows aesthetics reached directly, in parallel with the politics/economics path, since aesthetics draws on epistemology in its own right. Corrected the backward-propagation description so that captured institutions raise the cost of virtue ("their price rises") rather than making it impossible to practice, since no structure can revoke what belongs to a choosing person. Retitled and reframed the lateral-propagation section to describe a two-way testing relationship rather than a one-way chain link.
  • 14 Mar 26 — Added a summary table of the three propagation patterns. Added an italic subtitle. Compressed the scenario narratives to reduce overlap with the article while preserving their level of detail. Added a concluding paragraph connecting the propagation patterns to what the system must be designed to withstand. Voice tightening throughout.
  • 11 Mar 26 — Initial publication.
