The Structural Map
The identity statement compresses three layers of inheritance into a single sentence. This sidebar expands it into a reference table — one row per philosophical domain — so the reader can see at a glance what RO preserves, what it integrates, and where its own innovations must sit.
Table 1.1.6-2 — What We Keep / What We Add
Structural map of RO's inheritance and additions across the eight philosophical domains.
| Domain | What RO Keeps (from TO) | What RO Integrates (from OO) | What RO Adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metaphysics | Existence, identity, consciousness. Reality independent of the knower. | — | — |
| Epistemology | Reason as the means of knowledge. | Fallibilism; method over canon; dialogue as testing. | epistemic integrity — truth-preservation built into systems. |
| Consciousness / Volition | Self-directed focus; the choice to think as the root of moral agency. | — | — |
| Ethics | Rational egoism. Life as the standard of value. | Openness to retesting moral applications. | encoded objective law; The restraint principle; systemic moral-hazard awareness. |
| Virtue | Seven Virtues as behavioral architecture. | Benevolence developed as a major Objectivist virtue grounded in rational egoism. | — |
| Rights / Politics | Rights as boundary conditions against force, derived from rational life. | — | privacy by design; answerability — rights given operational form. |
| Economics | Capitalism as the moral logic of voluntary exchange. | — | engineered interdependence; bounded interdependence — voluntary exchange structurally protected. |
| Aesthetics | Art as psycho-epistemology; values made experienceable. | — | art as feedback — aesthetic integrity preserved as a structural function. |
How to Read This Table
The table encodes two patterns.
The inheritance pattern runs top to bottom. The upper domains — metaphysics, epistemology, consciousness — are almost entirely preserved from TO, with OO's method integrated at the epistemological hinge. These are the load-bearing foundations. RO does not modify what already holds.
The addition pattern concentrates in the middle and lower domains — ethics through aesthetics — where the design gap between principle and institutional outcome is widest. This is not coincidence. The load path analysis in unit (1.1.5) showed that the gap grows as one moves downstream: the further from metaphysics, the greater the distance between what the philosophy commits to and what the systems it governs actually produce. RO's innovations sit precisely where the gap sits.
The table also reveals what is absent. No innovation modifies the metaphysical premises. No innovation reopens the question of reason's authority. No innovation alters the standard of value. The additions are operational — they translate moral commitments into institutional form — and they sit downstream of the foundations they serve.
Change Log
- 17 Aug 26 — Phase C manual review: corrected Virtue row to credit benevolence as a major Objectivist virtue grounded in rational egoism and removed the retired standalone
resilienceaddition (folded into epistemic integrity per WP4 FINAL); corrected "Institutional Design" to "answerability" in the Rights/Politics row. - 14 Mar 26 — Revised under review-revise protocol. Voice tightening. Minor prose refinements in "How to Read This Table" section.
- 11 Mar 26 — Initial publication. Structural Map sidebar for unit (1.1.6).
