RO in Ten Lines 1.1.6-1

Definition Sidebar — Unit 1.1.6

The Compact Formulation

The identity statement in the article is precise but extended. This sidebar compresses it into a reference card — ten lines, each carrying one structural claim, designed to be consulted quickly and carried forward into Arc 2.

  1. Reality exists independently of consciousness. Identity is absolute. These premises are non-negotiable.

  2. Reason is the means of knowledge. No appeal to faith, feeling, or social consensus overrides the authority of rational inquiry.

  3. The individual's rational self-interest is the proper moral purpose of life. Ethics begins with life and terminates in flourishing.

  4. The Seven Virtues — rationality, independence, integrity, honesty, justice, productiveness, pride — are the behavioral architecture of a self-sustaining life. RO preserves them as the individual's operating system.

  5. Rights are boundary conditions against force, derived from the requirements of rational life. They are constraints, not entitlements.

  6. Knowledge is contextual: earned through testing, held within an evidentiary context that may expand, and always open to retesting when evidence warrants. Fallibilism is a discipline of honesty, not a retreat from certainty.

  7. Openness is bounded by identity. The system can admit new inputs and revise inherited conclusions — but its foundational commitments are not open questions while the system is operating.

  8. Nine design patterns — from epistemic integrity through art as feedback — add the operational layer that ethics and method alone cannot supply. They translate moral commitments into institutional, procedural, and systemic form.

  9. Four refusals protect the system's integrity: no drift without admission criteria, no over-encoding that replaces agency with compliance, no surveillance as a design default, no mechanization of morality.

  10. The engineering requirement is built to hold: principles validated not by argument alone but by whether the systems they produce can survive scale, absorb failure, resist capture, and recover from drift.

How to Use This Card

Lines 1–5 trace the TO inheritance declared in unit (1.1.3). Lines 6–7 trace the OO integration declared in unit (1.1.4). Lines 8–9 name the additions and refusals declared in this unit (1.1.6). Line 10 states the engineering requirement that governs the entire project.

The card is not a creed. It is a compression of the architecture this arc has established. The reader who can trace each line to its source and explain why it is structurally necessary has understood Arc 1.

Change Log
  • 17 Aug 26 — Phase C manual review: corrected "Ten design patterns — nine derivations and one extension" to "Nine design patterns" (WP4 FINAL fold). Card title ("Ten Lines") is a stylistic line-count, not a pattern count, and needs no change — confirmed by reading the card's own structure: line 8 covers all nine patterns collectively in a single line.
  • 14 Mar 26 — Revised under review-revise protocol. Consolidated the "How to Use This Card" section for concision. Voice tightening throughout.
  • 11 Mar 26 — Initial publication. Definition sidebar for unit (1.1.6).
