What This Timeline Is (and How to Use It)

This is a neutral chronology of documents, organizational moves, and public statements that shaped the ARI–TAS split. It anchors the architectural analysis in the main article with dated touchpoints. Use it to (a) locate primary sources quickly, and (b) see how posture → policy → institution unfolded over time.

Table 0.2.5-2: The Kelley–Peikoff Timeline Key documents, organizational moves, and public statements that shaped the ARI–TAS split, 1985–2005.

Year/Date Event Why It Matters (Design Effect)
1985 Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) founded Establishes a canon-anchoring hub with centralized curation and boundary-first posture.
1986 Kelley publishes The Evidence of the Senses Positions Kelley as a mainstream epistemologist; opens a lane for method/fallibilism that later informs the openness case.
Feb 27, 1989 Peter Schwartz, "On Sanctioning the Sanctioners" Frames platform-sharing as moral compromise; pushes sanction logic upstream of permission—precursor to "closed" posture.
Mar 1989 David Kelley, "A Question of Sanction" Defends engagement/toleration; articulates a method-first (open) posture in practice.
May 18, 1989 Leonard Peikoff, "Fact and Value" Declares Objectivism a closed system; converts an episode into institutional boundary logic; formal break with Kelley.
1990 Kelley circulates Truth and Toleration Systematizes the openness argument; recasts disagreement as a cognitive stress test rather than disloyalty.
1990 Institute for Objectivist Studies (IOS) founded Embeds openness institutionally: seminars, debates, cross-disciplinary outreach—method → org design.
1991 Peikoff publishes Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (OPAR) Canon codification; becomes curricular spine at ARI; reinforces boundary-first incentives.
1993–1998 Parallel development tracks ARI refines canon programs; IOS scales dialogue/outreach. Two coherent operating models crystallize.
1999 IOS becomes The Objectivist Center (TOC) Name shift signals broader cultural/educational mission while retaining openness posture.
2000 Kelley publishes The Contested Legacy of Ayn Rand Enlarged, durable statement of the open-method framework; reference text for TAS/TOC era.
2001–2004 Public interface divergence deepens ARI: tight essays/campus initiatives (low variance). TOC: translation/partnerships (higher variance). Posture → voice.
2005 TOC era consolidates (pre-"Atlas Society" branding) The split is now architectural: stable pipelines, tones, and incentive patterns on both sides.

How to Read This Timeline

The Hinge Is 1989: Sanction → System

The Schwartz/Peikoff–Kelley exchange transformed a tactical debate about platforming into a constitutional choice about the philosophy's operating posture. Once stated explicitly, posture became a spec that downstream committees, editors, and donors could act on—no drama required. The documents from this window are the founding architecture.

Institutionalization Hardens Posture into Pipelines

OPAR gave ARI a single-volume curricular spine; IOS/TOC gave openness a home with seminars and debates that made method visible. What you teach and test becomes who advances. Over the 1990s, each organization's advancement criteria—exegetical mastery versus integrative synthesis—selected different kinds of talent and public voice.

Attention and Money Are Multipliers

Preservation-oriented gifts and low-variance platforms stabilized ARI's coherence; project-based gifts and heterodox venues expanded TOC's reach. Funding and platform choices amplified the initial posture—pushing each organization toward its strength (and its failure mode) without anyone needing to intend the outcome.

Missing Error Protocols Drive Oscillation

Absent named procedures for disagreement and versioned change, each side defaulted to its posture under stress: boundary enforcement upstream (risk: brittleness) or fault isolation downstream (risk: drift). The oscillation between enforcement and permissiveness is a structural by-product, not a personality flaw.

By 2005, Divergence Is Architectural

After a decade and a half, the differences are not episodic. They are self-reinforcing systems with distinct curricula, pipelines, voices, and donors. At that point, "just be reasonable" cannot undo design; only protocol can.
