The Diagnostic Problem
The parent article establishes that the most dangerous failure mode in the virtue domain is not the absence of virtue but its simulation — the point at which virtue ceases to be practiced and begins to be performed. The structural consequence of this failure is severe: the agent or institution appears morally functional while the actual moral architecture degrades beneath the performance. Detection is difficult precisely because the outputs — the words, the compliance metrics, the public signals — look identical whether the virtue is practiced or performed.
This sidebar provides the compressed diagnostic reference. For each of the eight major virtues — the seven classical virtues from Traditional Objectivism (TO) plus benevolence from Open Objectivism (OO) — the table below identifies the observable markers that distinguish practice from performance. The test throughout is structural, not psychological: it concerns what the agent or institution does, not what it claims to feel or believe.
The drift indicators draw on the diagnostic discipline constructed in systemic moral-hazard awareness (1.2.8), specifically the hazard scan's capacity to detect where metrics have replaced the conditions they were designed to measure. Applied to virtue, the principle is the same: when the signal of virtue — the visible marker, the compliance checkpoint, the reputational display — becomes the target, the virtue beneath the signal quietly atrophies.
The Indicators
Rationality
Practiced: The agent actively engages with evidence that challenges existing conclusions. Inquiry is directed at reality, not at confirming prior commitments. When new evidence conflicts with held beliefs, the agent treats the conflict as information requiring investigation rather than as a threat requiring defense. This includes the discipline of declining commitments that exceed what one's own attention can honestly sustain — refusing, on one's own judgment, to take on more than can be done well.
Performed: The agent engages with evidence selectively — seeking confirmation, avoiding disconfirmation. The vocabulary of rationality is present ("evidence-based," "data-driven," "objective analysis"), but the inquiry process is structured to arrive at predetermined conclusions. The visible marker is the consistency with which the agent's "rational analysis" produces results that align with institutional preferences or prior commitments, regardless of the evidence encountered.
Drift signal: Rationality that never produces uncomfortable conclusions has probably stopped being rationality.
Independence
Practiced: The agent reaches conclusions through first-person reasoning, even when those conclusions diverge from consensus, institutional expectation, or social pressure. The agent can articulate the reasoning behind a position without reference to the authority of the source from which it was learned. This includes setting the shape of one's own commitments by one's own judgment, not by whatever an external party happens to demand.
Performed: The agent holds positions that appear independent — contrarian, unconventional, outside the mainstream — but the selection of which positions to hold tracks a different consensus: the in-group's consensus, the counter-culture's consensus, the thought-leader's consensus. Independence is measured by distance from one authority while dependence on another is unexamined.
Drift signal: Independence that always aligns with a recognizable tribe has probably stopped being independence.
Integrity
Practiced: The agent's behavior in private is consistent with the principles declared in public. When circumstances create pressure to compromise — financial incentive, social cost, institutional convenience — the agent either holds the principle or revises it openly, acknowledging the revision and its reasons. The OO modification applies: integrity includes the willingness to revise principles when evidence warrants, and the discipline to distinguish revision from drift — including, after a setback, the ongoing discipline of asking whether a held conclusion still tracks reality rather than defending it reflexively. It also includes deciding, in advance of a foreseen pressure, how one will act — not as a device that substitutes for character in the moment, but as principle applied honestly to one's own foreknowledge of where that pressure will be greatest. It also includes declining to promise what one privately knows one cannot deliver.
Performed: The agent maintains a public narrative of principled consistency while systematically making exceptions in practice. The exceptions are rationalized individually ("this case is different"), but the pattern — viewed structurally — reveals that the principle holds only when holding it is costless. When the cost rises, the principle bends. The bending is invisible in any single instance but auditable across time. A failure reviewed only defensively — never revisited to ask whether the conclusion that produced it still holds — is this same drift, arriving through avoidance rather than exception.
Drift signal: Integrity that never costs anything, or that never revisits a conclusion a failure has tested, has probably stopped being integrity.
Honesty
Practiced: The agent's communication accurately represents the agent's actual understanding of reality. Uncertainty is communicated as uncertainty. Ignorance is acknowledged. Mistakes are corrected without deflection. The standard is not perfect knowledge but accurate representation — the refusal to allow a gap between what the agent knows and what the agent communicates. This includes an accurate, uninflated accounting of one's own actual capacity — what one can genuinely sustain, not what one wishes were true of oneself.
Performed: The agent communicates in ways that are technically accurate but structurally misleading — omitting relevant context, framing selectively, allowing listeners to draw conclusions the agent knows to be false without explicitly asserting the falsehood. The legal standard ("nothing I said was untrue") has replaced the moral standard ("I did not create a false impression").
Drift signal: Honesty that requires a lawyer to verify has probably stopped being honesty.
Justice
Practiced: The agent evaluates others based on evidence proportional to the severity of the judgment. Positive and negative evaluations are both grounded in observed behavior rather than in group membership, reputation, or tribal affiliation. The agent revises judgments when new evidence warrants revision and applies the same evaluative standards to allies and adversaries. Under scarcity, the agent knows which commitments matter most and protects them first, rather than treating every claim on her time as equally weighted.
Performed: The agent applies rigorous evaluative standards to out-group members and lenient standards to in-group members — or the reverse, applying performative self-criticism to one's own group while excusing genuine failures. Justice becomes a weapon deployed asymmetrically: the standard is invoked when it serves the agent's interests and suspended when it does not.
Drift signal: Justice that consistently favors one's own side has probably stopped being justice.
Productiveness
Practiced: The agent creates value — goods, services, ideas, or works — through purposeful effort directed at producing something others can use, build on, or benefit from. The measure is the value produced, not the activity generated. Rest and reflection are part of the practice, because sustained productiveness requires the slack that prevents burnout and preserves the quality of output. Under overload, the agent has already identified which of her efforts are load-bearing and protects those first.
Performed: The agent generates visible activity — meetings attended, hours logged, projects initiated — without proportional value creation. Busyness substitutes for productivity. The output volume is high, but the value-per-output ratio is low, declining, or unmeasured. The performance of work has replaced the production of value.
Drift signal: Productiveness measured in hours rather than outcomes has probably stopped being productiveness.
Pride
Practiced: The agent maintains moral self-worth grounded in the honest assessment of having lived by one's principles — having practiced rationality, maintained integrity, produced value, and sustained the other virtues through effort and discipline. Pride is the emotional consequence of a life examined and found structurally sound by one's own standards, including the willingness to repair a known defect rather than let it stand unaddressed.
Performed: The agent maintains self-esteem detached from moral assessment. Pride is based on identity, achievement, or social position rather than on the ongoing evaluation of whether one's life meets one's own rational standards. The performance is visible in the resistance to self-examination: pride that cannot survive honest self-assessment is not the virtue TO described.
Drift signal: Pride that avoids self-examination has probably stopped being pride.
Benevolence (OO)
Practiced: The agent extends goodwill as the default posture toward an unproven counterparty or an unfamiliar disagreement — treating an unfamiliar case as a potential source of value rather than a presumptive threat, while still applying justice's evaluative standards once evidence accumulates. Benevolence and justice operate together: goodwill opens the engagement; evidence, not sentiment, still governs the eventual judgment.
Performed: The agent substitutes niceness for justice — extending goodwill indefinitely regardless of accumulating evidence, or withholding honest evaluation to avoid the discomfort of a negative judgment. Performed benevolence looks identical to conflict-avoidance: agreeable in the moment, but never actually engaging the disagreement honestly enough to reach a real conclusion.
Drift signal: Benevolence that never resolves into an actual judgment, once the evidence is in, has probably stopped being benevolence and started being avoidance.
Using the Indicators
The drift indicators are diagnostic, not accusatory. Their purpose is not to convict but to detect — to identify the structural conditions under which practiced virtue begins its migration toward performance, so that the migration can be caught and reversed before the virtue architecture degrades.
Three principles govern their application.
The first is that the indicators operate on patterns, not instances. A single exception does not indicate drift. A systematic pattern — rationality that consistently avoids disconfirming evidence, justice that reliably favors one's allies, integrity that always bends under cost — indicates a structural shift from practice to performance.
The second is that the indicators apply to institutions as readily as to individuals. An organization that measures honesty through compliance training, integrity through policy adherence, and productiveness through activity metrics has institutionalized the performance of virtue while creating no structural mechanism for its practice. The drift indicators are the diagnostic tool for detecting this substitution.
The third is that detection is only valuable if it routes to correction. The drift indicators connect to the architecture constructed across Arc 2: epistemic integrity's (1.2.1) correction-channel clause provides the structured mechanism for revisiting a conclusion after failure has tested it; the hazard scan from systemic moral-hazard awareness (1.2.8) provides the institutional detection mechanism; the restraint principle (1.2.3) bounds what a system may demand of finite attention, so the demands on virtue never exceed what a real person's cognitive capacity can sustain. Detection without correction is surveillance. Detection routed through these architectural mechanisms is the practice of moral maintenance — the structural discipline that keeps the virtue architecture honest, without ever doing the choosing on the agent's behalf.
Change Log
- 18 Aug 26 — Rebuilt to match the parent article's revision: folded the former standalone Resilience entry into Integrity (its postmortem/ongoing-alignment and pre-commitment/long-range-principle content, plus its drift signal) and into Rationality/Justice/Productiveness (its slack and triage-under-overload content); removed the standalone Restraint entry, since a system doesn't perform virtue the way its three questions imply, and relocated its genuine personal content (not overcommitting, honest capacity assessment) into Rationality, Honesty, and Independence; added a new Benevolence (OO) entry, since benevolence is now credited as an eighth major virtue rather than a separate category. Eight virtue entries total, not nine.
- 15 Mar 26 — Initial draft. Companion sidebar to (1.3.5). Provided a compressed diagnostic reference for nine entries (seven classical virtues plus two applied virtues).
- 10 Aug 26 — Reworded the introduction and the Resilience entry's heading to drop resilience's status as a virtue; superseded by the full correction above.
